How soon can I take a new exam?
Law Enforcement / Corrections Candidates
The written exam may be taken once every 90 days (~3 months) regardless of whether you pass or fail the exam. If you fail the physical ability test (PAT), you have an unlimited number of retest opportunities to pass the PAT within 180 days (~6 months), before or after, your written exam date. Please note that an agency may require more restrictive timelines than provided here, so be sure to check the department's requirements. You must pass both the written and physical tests for your scores to be made available to the agencies to which you have applied (for those departments that require both). To retake either exam, you will be required to pay the full fee.
Dispatcher Candidates
The written exam may be taken once every 90 days (~3 months) regardless of whether you pass or fail the exam. You will need to complete and pass the typing test prior to your scores being made available to the agencies you applied to. This may be done within 90 days (before or after) your written exam. To take the typing test, please log in to your PST account and follow the steps under "Typing Tests." You must also select which score you want PST to forward to the agencies to which you applied. You have four (4) attempts to take the actual typing test every seven (7) days.

Firefighter Candidates
Firefighter candidates may take one written exam every 90 days (~3 months). However, if you fail the written exam, you must wait at least 90 days (~3 months) from your written exam to test again for any agency. You must pass a PST CPAT within 180 days (~6 months), before or after your written test date, for your scores to be made available to agencies that require both the PST written and PST CPAT. If you fail a CPAT test, you may re-take the exam as soon as you feel ready. The CPAT retest fee is $154. Please log in to your PST account to schedule your CPAT.
King County Medic One Candidates
The Firefighter retest policies above apply.
The EMT exam must be scheduled when you select the King County Medic One position. You are eligible to retest the EMT exam ONCE within 90 days of your passing Firefighter exam. The retest fee is $25.
If you choose to retake the Firefighter exam for KCMO, you will also be required to retake the EMT exam.
EMT exam retests (without retesting the Firefighter exam) CANNOT be scheduled through the PST website. You must email PST (contact@publicsafetytesting.com) to schedule a retest.
